What Drives Your Car Insurance Premium
The factors insurers weigh — and the handful you can actually influence.
Auto premiums reflect risk. Insurers weigh your driving history, the vehicle, how much you drive, where you live, and the coverages and limits you choose. Some factors you can't change quickly; others you can.
Within your control: raising your deductible to lower the premium, maintaining continuous coverage, bundling policies, and keeping a clean driving record over time. Dropping collision or comprehensive on a low-value older car can also make sense.
Be careful not to underinsure just to cut the bill. Liability limits that are too low can leave you exposed after a serious accident. The goal is the right coverage at a fair price, not the cheapest possible number.
